Applied Arts Collection

Items from Applied Arts CollectionThe Applied Arts Collection consists of various items – objects of art arranged according to the material, the collection of clocks and the collection of furniture. During the years, another collection was separated from the rest, mostly containing items from the 17th until the second half of the 20th century.

These are often items manufactured in the Baroque and Biedermeier style, with a few items from the Classicism and Historicism, as well as Art Nouveau, Art Deco and Modernism.

The most impressive items include the Art Nouveau dining room set, the ownership of the Opatija family of Stjepan Car, then the neo-Romanesque study by the captain Emanuel Clemens Dworski and the Biedermeier chest of drawers and the Classicistic tabernacle belonging to Josip Gorup (a distinguished entrepreneur from Rijeka at the turn of the 19th into the 20th century).

The Applied Arts Collection contains one of the most complete collections of clocks. It contains house clocks – longcase clocks, fireplace clocks, wall clocks, etc, originating from the beginning of the 19th century until the second half of the 20th century.

Although these were rarely made by watchmakers from Rijeka, many of them were used in Rijeka and the littoral. Most clocks are of northern provenance, from central Europe, but the Museum owns some articles of French production and clocks from other countries.
